Front-of-Pack Warning Labels: Why Transparency Is the Future of India’s Food Industry

India’s Food

India is witnessing a growing debate over front-of-pack labeling (FOPL) on packaged foods — a policy that could significantly reshape how consumers understand what they eat. Health activist Dr. Sivaranjani recently called for clear warning labels on packaged food products. Instead of complicated nutrition charts, she proposes simple alerts on the front of packages such as “High in Sugar,” “High in Salt,” or “High in Saturated Fat.”

The argument is straightforward: when consumers shop, they make decisions quickly. Simple warning labels allow them to immediately identify unhealthy products and make more informed choices. Currently, India’s food regulator has proposed a star-rating system for packaged foods. While this model provides general nutritional guidance, critics argue that it may dilute the seriousness of high sugar, salt, or fat levels in certain products.

The conversation has gained momentum through digital advocacy as well. Influencer and food awareness campaigner Revant Himatsingka (popularly known as Food Pharmer) has repeatedly highlighted misleading marketing claims in processed foods and called for stronger transparency standards. India’s food industry is expanding rapidly. The packaged food market is estimated to be worth over $130 billion, with consumption continuing to grow across urban and semi-urban markets. However, this growth also raises concerns about rising diet-related health issues.

Front-of-pack warning labels could have three major impacts:

1. Empowered Consumers: Clear labels help consumers quickly understand nutritional risks.

2. Industry Accountability: Companies may reformulate products to avoid warning labels.

3. Healthier Consumption Trends: Consumers' labelling gradually shifts toward better food choices.

But the debate is not just about food labelling.

It represents a larger shift toward transparency, informed decision-making, and ethical business practices.

Young digital voices raising awareness and experienced policymakers shaping regulations together create a powerful ecosystem for change. When awareness meets responsible entrepreneurship, it builds a more sustainable economic and health future.

The next generation of successful companies will not just sell products — they will earn trust through transparency.
