Vietnam's EV giant VinFast has formally entered India by opening its first showroom in Surat, Gujarat, on 27 July. The move is a resounding vote of confidence in India's fast-evolving electric vehicle market and heralds a larger presence in the country.
VinFast's flagship electric SUVs, the VF 6 and VF 7, are on display at the new Surat showroom. These are the company's first right-hand drive cars in the country, and sales will open with a fully refundable deposit of INR 21,000. Customers will be able to book the cars either online or through the showroom.
VinFast's India long-term strategy is well beyond a showroom launch. It is building a world-class manufacturing complex in Thoothukudi, Tamil Nadu, where it will make its electric vehicles locally. That says a lot about India's place on the global map for VinFast and its vision to position India as a future hub of EV manufacturing.
VinFast expects to have over 35 dealerships at the end of the year across 27+ cities in India. It is not just selling cars, but all out to provide a total ownership experience with charging points and after-sales care. For this, VinFast has partnered with RoadGrid, myTVS, and Global Assure.
It has also partnered with BatX Energies to enable a circular battery value chain, working to maximise the recycling of batteries and underpinning the brand's commitment to sustainable innovation.
At the same time, the world's leading EV maker, Tesla, has also made an entry into India with its Model Y SUV being rolled out earlier this month. The Model Y is being imported from Tesla's Shanghai factory and costs from INR 59.89 lakh. It is also setting the ground for supercharger stations in municipalities such as Mumbai and Delhi.
As global and regional players vie for attention in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets, Indian consumers are set to benefit from greater choice, innovation, and a much-needed push towards sustainable mobility.
