Boring Products. Powerful Brands: How Everyday Commodities Become Billion-Dollar Businesses

The most valuable brand opportunities are not always found in futuristic categories.

Sometimes, they are hiding in products people have been buying for decades.

Think about salt, water, milk, paint, spices, biscuits, adhesives and electrical products. On the surface, these are everyday commodities. The basic products themselves are not radically different.

Yet companies such as Tata Salt, Bisleri, Amul, Asian Paints, MDH, Parle and Fevicol have built enormous businesses by giving customers something beyond the product.

They created a reason to choose.

The product is only the starting point

A commodity is usually bought based on factors such as price, availability and basic functionality. A brand changes the equation.

Customers begin to associate the product with trust, consistency, familiarity and quality. That shift is powerful.

  • Salt becomes Tata Salt.

  • Milk becomes Amul.

  • Paint becomes Asian Paints.

  • Adhesive becomes Fevicol.

  • Biscuits become Parle-G.

The category existed before the brand. The brand created the preference.

From price competition to preference

This is where the real business advantage emerges.

Commodity: "Who is cheaper?"

Brand: "Which one do I trust?"

Strong brand: "This is the one I always buy."

When customers develop that preference, businesses can compete on more than price.

They can build stronger distribution, improve retention and, in many cases, command a premium.

That is why brand building is not simply a marketing exercise. It can become a significant business moat.

The founder lesson

For founders, there is an important takeaway. You don't always need to invent a completely new category.

Some of the biggest opportunities can exist inside large, familiar and highly competitive markets.

The question is not always: "What has never been done before?"

It can also be: "What do people already buy, and how can we give them a better reason to choose us?"

That could come from better product quality, stronger distribution, superior customer experience, memorable positioning or simply building trust more consistently than competitors.

The opportunity in "boring" categories

Some of India's strongest businesses were built around products that hardly sound exciting on a startup pitch deck.

That is precisely what makes the lesson interesting.

A huge existing market means customers already understand the need. The opportunity is to build a business that earns their preference within that market.

Boring category.Better execution.Stronger brand.Bigger business.

The next breakout consumer brand may not come from inventing something entirely new. It may come from making something familiar meaningfully better and easier to choose.

What is one "boring" Indian category you think is still waiting for its breakout brand?
