Jio’s 1,600-Satellite Plan: Reliance Takes India’s Telecom Race Into Orbit
Reliance Jio may be preparing for its next major telecom battle — this time, in space.

Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited is reportedly planning a 1,600-satellite Low Earth Orbit (LEO) constellation at around 650 km above Earth, potentially putting the Indian telecom giant in direct competition with satellite-internet players such as Starlink and Amazon Leo.
If the reported roadmap materialises, Jio would be moving beyond its traditional terrestrial telecom infrastructure and building a satellite network designed to deliver high-speed connectivity across India.
A 1,600-satellite constellation
According to the reported plans, Jio could build its constellation in phases over the next decade.
The proposed timeline is:
2027: Test flight
2028: Initial satellite connectivity in India
2030: 400–450 satellites targeted
2035: Full constellation of around 1,600 satellites
The proposed satellites could reportedly deliver 100–150 Gbps of capacity each. At full deployment, the network could potentially provide around 4–4.8 Tbps of total capacity over India.
That would make Jio's proposed network one of the more ambitious satellite-connectivity projects targeting the Indian market.
Jio vs Starlink vs Amazon Leo
India's satellite broadband market is becoming increasingly competitive.

But the direction is clear: India's satellite broadband market is becoming a serious strategic battleground.
Why the 650 km orbit matters
Jio's reported choice of an orbit around 650 km above Earth is also noteworthy.
LEO satellite networks operate much closer to Earth than traditional geostationary satellites. This allows them to offer lower latency while requiring constellations of many satellites to maintain continuous coverage.
A roughly 650 km orbital altitude could also place Jio in a different part of the LEO landscape from some of Starlink's commonly used orbital shells.
For a constellation operating at this scale, however, orbital altitude is only one part of the equation. Spectrum coordination, satellite-to-satellite coverage, ground stations, launch capacity and regulatory approvals will all play a critical role.
Why this matters for India
Satellite broadband could become particularly important for parts of India where conventional telecom infrastructure is difficult or expensive to deploy.
Remote villages, islands, mountainous regions, rural communities and areas with limited terrestrial infrastructure could potentially benefit from satellite connectivity.

Jio's satellite ambitions come at an interesting moment for India's telecom and space industries.
Reliance has already demonstrated its ability to build and scale massive terrestrial infrastructure. A large LEO constellation would represent a very different challenge — one involving satellites, launch systems, spectrum, orbital coordination and space-based infrastructure.
It also reflects a broader shift in the definition of telecom infrastructure.
If Jio executes on the reported plan, India's telecom competition could increasingly extend from the ground into orbit — creating a new infrastructure battle between Jio, Starlink and Amazon Leo.
And for investors, that's the part worth watching.
India's next connectivity race may not just be about who builds the biggest network on Earth. It could also be about who builds the most capable network above it.
