Founded in 2014, Pratilipi, a digital storytelling platform, has grown to become a significant player in India’s regional content ecosystem. While the rise and fall of numerous platforms characterized the digital content industry, Pratilipi stood out by sticking to its focus on long-form content, even in the face of evolving market trends and challenges.
A Platform for Stories and Writers
Pratilipi enables authors to publish long-form content in multiple Indian languages, catering to readers across the country. It has built a strong community of 1.5 million writers and 6.5 million monthly readers. This user-generated content platform encourages writers and readers to interact, fostering a vibrant ecosystem of storytelling.
Staying True to Its Roots
Unlike many digital platforms that diversified into short videos and fleeting content formats, Pratilipi focused on in-depth, engaging stories. This decision helped the platform maintain a loyal fanbase, predominantly women aged 18-35. “Long-form storytelling will never go out of fashion,” says Ranjeet Pratap Singh, Pratilipi’s founder, who believes that great stories will always find their audience.
Overcoming Challenges
The journey, however, hasn’t been without obstacles. In the early days, Pratilipi tackled issues like building a library of quality content and supporting Indian languages. Leveraging public domain works and following strategies inspired by platforms like Wattpad helped the startup gain initial traction.
Economic challenges also loomed large, particularly during the funding crunch of 2023. With depleting funds and a mere six-month runway, the company faced tough decisions, including layoffs and delayed salaries. Yet, through strategic cost-cutting and focus on core offerings, Pratilipi weathered the storm, becoming cash-flow positive in July 2024.
Diversification and Monetization
Recognizing the potential for intellectual property (IP) monetization, Pratilipi diversified into audiobooks, podcasts, and comics. Its audiobook platform, Pratilipi FM, now attracts 170,000 active listeners monthly, while Pratilipi Comics boasts 80,000 readers. The platform has also ventured into adapting its stories into TV shows, web series, and films. Collaborations with production houses like Disney Star and Amazon have further cemented its foothold in the entertainment sector.
Pratilipi generates revenue through subscription models and story adaptations. It charges a flat fee or a percentage of production budgets for adaptations, providing authors with a share of the earnings. Its premium subscription plan, launched in 2020, now has 400,000 paying users.
Future Prospects
With plans to go public by 2026, Pratilipi is eyeing international markets, particularly the Middle East and the US. Scaling beyond its current base of cost-conscious, non-English readers in smaller Indian towns is crucial for its growth.
Industry experts believe Pratilipi’s success will depend on its ability to scale its user base and effectively monetize IP across multiple formats. While challenges remain, Singh remains optimistic: “Great stories travel across formats and geographies. Our competition isn’t other storytelling platforms but anything that captures consumer time and attention.”
Pratilipi’s evolution from a digital storytelling platform to an IP powerhouse exemplifies resilience and innovation in a rapidly changing digital landscape. Its journey underscores the enduring power of storytelling, even in an era of dwindling attention spans.
