In a significant milestone in cross-border fintech cooperation, Namibia has signed with India for the adoption of the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), an instant payments platform which has transformed digital transactions in India. The deal was signed between the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) and the Bank of Namibia during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's recent tour of the African country.
This achievement is more than a technology transfer. It is the start of a wider movement where India is not only exporting software but also offering a winning model for inclusive digital finance. Under the terms of the deal, NPCI will share with Namibia both the underlying technology and strategic knowledge to create a secure, efficient, and scalable national payment infrastructure.
A Digital Leap for Namibia
For Namibia, the implementation of UPI technology is set to speed up the country's transition to financial inclusion and less cash reliance. Commenting on the progress, the central bank governor of Namibia Johannes Gawaxab reiterated that this project is designed to develop a new-age digital system that is inclusive, secure, and accessible. The nation views it as a way not just to make payments easier but to bring more citizens into the formal economy.
India's UPI Goes Global
This is part of India's overall fintech diplomacy drive. In recent years, the NPCI, through its global entity NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL), has entered into similar arrangements with nations like France, UAE, Singapore, Bhutan, and Nepal. In September 2024, a similar effort was initiated in association with Trinidad and Tobago. The objective is clear: make UPI a global standard for real-time payments.
India’s UPI processed over 18.4 billion transactions in June 2025 alone, worth a staggering ₹24.04 lakh crore. Now, with Namibia onboard, the technology is expanding its global footprint while remaining committed to its core vision of democratizing digital payments.
A Win-Win for Innovation and Inclusion
The Namibia-UPI agreement is a fintech collaboration above all else. It is a case study in what can be achieved in closing gaps in development when public digital infrastructure is shared responsibly. As countries around the globe seek affordable and replicable digital solutions, the journey of UPI goes global and Namibia is at the forefront.
